This is my new 5-year plan. Just to live. To experience absolute life. Completely unadulterated, unsaturated, 100% life. It seems so appealing. Especially right now.
I leave for an adventure tomorrow. From Seattle to Portland to SF to LA back up to SF then back down to LA then up to SF again then to Portland and Seattle. I'm looking forward to this trip. I need to get out of Seattle for a bit. I feel like lately I'm running low on ideas. I need my fill of the most vapid city in America. Bukowski, in Pulp, called LA "the city of Lost Assholes". I really am excited to see so many people, though. We're doing this all n very low money, too. That will prove to be either tedious or wonderful. Either way, it will be exciting. Expect a few photos to pop up here when i return home or get bored while I'm down there. I'll be staying with my favorite guy in the world, Travis.
Next week is also my birthday (the 17th). I've never been one to celebrate, but this year, Jess is taking me to SF on the 16th. We're gonna hang out with Crispin Glover and see his new film "It Is Fine, Everything Is Fine!". It's the second part to "What Is It?". Oh, and no, I still won't drink with you. Sorry.
When I get home, I'm going to buckle down and finish this script I've been working on for a while. I'll then start the process of making this little film of mine on very a low budget. I'm in the process of saving for a new camera. Specifically, a Panasonic AG DVX100B. I might relocate to Hollywood to make this just in the sense of tradition. Well, that and the fact that everyone i want to be in it lives there.
So if i don't see you tonight, farewell. by this time tomorrow, i'll have my legs hanging out the window of a speeding car while i wear my sunglasses singing old Leadbelly songs.
I can feel myself getting closer and closer to turning into Tom Waits. hah. xo.

Heifer whines could be human cries Closer comes the screaming knife This beautiful creature must die This beautiful creature must die A death for no reason And death for no reason is MURDER And the flesh you so fancifully fry Is not succulent, tasty or kind It's death for no reason And death for no reason is MURDER
And the calf that you carve with a smile Is MURDER And the turkey you festively slice Is MURDER Do you know how animals die ?
Kitchen aromas aren't very homely It's not "comforting", cheery or kind It's sizzling blood and the unholy stench Of MURDER
It's not "natural", "normal" or kind The flesh you so fancifully fry The meat in your mouth As you savour the flavour Of MURDER
NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER NO, NO, NO, IT'S MURDER Oh ... and who hears when animals cry ?

I went shopping for 45s today and here's what I got:
-Devo -"Girl U Want / Whip It" -The Music Machine - "Talk Talk / Come On In" -Blondie - "X-Offender / In The Sun" - The Sisters of Mercy - "Alice / Floorshow" Original Pressing from 1982 -Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick, and Tich - "Hold Tight! / You Know What I Want"
When I bought the Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich record, the guy behind the counter said, "You know this is 10 bucks right?" I told him that I did and he said, "ok just making sure". So, I think I have a problem. Hah. But in all fairness, tt's a really hard record to find and an amazing one at that. I was surprised the Sisters record wasn't more. They had no idea how valuable it is. I think it was only like 6 or 8 bucks. Not bad, right?
Right now I'm watching "Patty Whacked". It's a documentary on the irish mob. It makes me miss my irish relatives hah.
Also, here's a cool video I found, and since I'm in a Cramps mood, I'm forcing it on you, too.

Oh my, what a day it's been thus far. At the moment,Ii wrote from the Foreigner tourbus backstage while Styx is playing. next is either Foreigner or Def Leppard. Confused? Let me back up a bit.
Ok, so i woke up today at 9:30 to get ready for the day. My father has been touring for the last two and a half months with Foreigner (he is a front of house sound engineer and a tour manager), but has been in town the last 4 days. Today is technically the last show of the tour, except Foreigner has decided to play a couple shows in Europe and one In Africa with Styx. Why they would want to go and do something like that is beyond me. Anyways, long story short (too late), I'm here to spend time with my father. He's out running around and working right now, so no hanging out, but maybe later.
Wow, this is fragmented, i'm really sorry.
Right now I'm watching some Clint Eastwood cop drama on mute and listening to a fantastic playlist I put together (see bottom). I'm a bit hungry but I'm pretty comfortable right now. It's cold on the bus but colder outside. There's some really awful looking people here. It's unfortunate. I just want to pull them aside and tell them, "didn't you kinda get a clue how fucking dumb you are when you were getting your ass kicked in high school? so do something about it. Oh yeah, and styx sucks." But whatever, not my problem.
Oh, and don't eat the halibut, they spelled it wrong. Ugh, I have a headache. ans you should watch Californication and Dexter. I'm addicted to both shows right now.
( Photographs and a Playlist. )
I'm gonna go watch Ugly Betty now. xo.

| Dan's Keen Pt. I: Gay Piccadilly Slang |
[23 Aug 2007|12:38pm] |
|
Thing I Like, Pt. I: Gay Piccadilly Slang.
A lost art, indeed. Used in the 60s to slip thier homosexuality past the good people of the Piccadilly Circus (the circular area in the West End of London where Shaftesbury Ave., Leicester Sq., Glasshouse St., Haymarket, and Regent St. all meet.), the gay prostitutes would use code so they could converse without any unwanted trouble from the locals. They called it "Polari" (also known as Parlare, Parlary, Palarie, Palari, or Parlyaree). It was composed mainly of slang terms from other alternative subcultured languages such as thieves' cant, backslang, rhyming slang, and some others I don't remember (sorry. hah). It later incorporated Gipsy and Yiddish slang terms as well, being as that the Jewish subculture was just east of the Circus. I've also heard that some U.S. slang was added from when the US troops occupied Britian during WWII and the slang from the drug users from the 60s was also used. It was split up a lot and different areas used different slang terms. It usually depended on where in town you hailed from. In the East End, the dialect was based off of canal or boat-speak. In the West End, it was moreso theatre-speak.
Here's some terms that were commonly used in the language: ajax - something close by. basket - a man's buldge. batts - shoes. bijou - small or miniscule. bod - body (duh). bona - good or nice. camp - effeminate (it comes from the term "KAMP" or "Known As Male Prostitute"). capello - hat. carts/cartso - penis. carsey - toilet. chicken - young man or boy. charper - search charpering omi - policeman cod - vile or disgusting. cottage - public bathroom. cottaging - having or looking for sex in a bathroom. crimper - hairdresser (also known as a "riah shusher"). drag - clothes. eek - face. ends - hair. esong - nose. fantabulosa - wonderful. fruit - someone overtly gay or a queen. gelt - money. glossies - magazines. jarry - food. kaffies - trousers. lallies - legs. meese - plain, boring, or ugly. naff - bad or drab (it stands for Not Available For Fucking) national handbag - the dole. ogles - eyes. omi - man, most likely gay. palare pipe - telephone. plate - feet. polone - woman. pots - teeth. riah/riha - hair. shyker/shyckle - wig. slap - makeup. strillers - piano. thews - thighs. trade - sex. vada - see. also known as "varda". willets - breasts.
Though the language has died out immensely, due to the fact that there is no need for a secret language anymore, there are still a few places where it cropped up. It was heavily used in the old BBC radio program from the 60s called "Round the Horne" when they would do a sketch known as "Julian and Sandy". There are also some hairdressers in London and Brighton who have open shops called "Bona Riah". This slang can also be found in some gay publications for camp affect. If you've ever seen the Film "Velvet Goldmine", then you'll recognize the scene in the bar where the two gay men are chatting in undecipherable jargan with the subtitles. That was also a bit of Polari.
Oh, and this guy did a record called "Bona Drag" and a song called "Piccadilly Palare"...or something like that. He's pretty good.
I urge you all to start using this speak. It'd sure be a bona way to find yourself ajax to a fantabulosa basket for a bit of trade in the cottage or over the palare pipe. Watch out for charpering omi's though, you cod chicken, you. xo.

Pornography is either historic or contemporary. As opposed to contemporary, (which is usually viewed for...well....do i have to even say?), historic pornography is something of a glimpse to the past. Back when sex really was dangerous. Where brothells were common places in rundown towns but at the same time, were absolutely unheard of in the nicer parts of a county. When pornography and erotic novels (or 'underground texts' as they were called) were not easy to come across. Not like today where there's naked women on the internet, television, or gas station magazine rack.
I'd have to say that the erotic novels were, to me, by far the most intriguing. They weren't written like the sickly smut you find in your junk mail folder, but with a sort of sofistication and sincerity. It noted a respect for women and a joy for sex that was still much intuned with romance and love. It understood that sex wasn't only physically pleasurable, but emotionally as well. A far cry from today. For instance, this is an excerpt from a book called "The Yellow Room" from 1891:
"Sir Edward could contain himself no longer and, grasping Alice's head with both his hands, he pushed his weapon well into her mouth and spent down her throat. He lay back in a swoon of delight, and the girl, wet as she could be, leant her head against his knee, almost choked by the violence of the delightful emission and stunned by the mystery revealed to her.'"
Much more delightful than the "hot slutz want ur cum!" garbage that litter spam emails. Here are some of the old erotic photos, as well. (don't worry, I won't tell your boss you're looking at porn at 9 in the morning.)

I dare you not to laugh at that one. Hah.

It's interesting to see that some terminology like "69" has been around for a lot longer than you would think.

i was suprised to find a strap on so early on.

And I must ask, please don't jack off to this. Think of it as art or an article of history. You wouldn't jack off to the Mona Lisa, would you? Maybe you would, you fucking creep. (And yeah, I just compaired vintage pornography to the Mona Lisa on an equal level. I can hear snobby art critics turning over in their figurative graves.) xo.

BATU NIAH - Oh Malaysia, how you never cease to impress. This week a small-town family, from the quaint little town of Batu Niah, was unpleasantly suprised last night after being startled by the sound of gunfire aimed at their house. When they ran out to investigate (which is exactly what you should do when gunshots are pelting your veranda), there were alarmed and terrified to find the head of one severed swine on the cover of their automobile.
Now, here in America, a pigs head is no big thing. However, in Batu Niah, it's association with occult roots, black magic, and animistic practices are well-known. What added insult to injury, though, were the letters left with the head that read of well-detailed death threats. The letters came in two languages, forcing the observation that these malfeasants were set on getting their point across (though, the notes and pig's head seem a bit like overkill and frankly, a little tacky).

I don't know why it's taken me forever to post an entry concerning my North Bend visit (which feels like it happened a million years ago) but, nonetheless, here it is. I wouldn't call it some spectacular mountain getaway for one, but it was a nice reclusion for a recluse. My days were spent either walking around, filming things I enjoyed looking at, looking at birds, starting fires, later extinguishing them (fear not, smokie), or reading W magazine. Speaking of W Magazine, I believe it was the issue with Kirsten Dunst on the cover, featured a strange |add for Georgio Armani| that seemed to bear a striking resemblance to the |Gorilla Biscuits logo|. It may just be me, though. Judge for yourself. Oh, and if anyone knows |who this is|, tell her to marry me. She is too goddamn adorable. Anyways, back to the trip. While I was there I did a lot of filming in hopes of editing together a short that would depict a common feeling I use to have when I would visit there as a child. If you've visited North Bend or the outer skirts of it, you'll know it gives off this sort of uneasy and strange feel. A looming kind of aura. It's strange feeling is what inspired David Lynch to write Twin Peaks and shoot it in North Bend. While I was there, I was residing on a plot of land that my family has owned for over 3 generations. I grew up frequenting it and have fond memories of exploring those woods. They still scare me to this day. They're terribly menacing. I wanted to celebrate just how strange that place is. The film was also inspired by an idea I had while driving from Seattle to North Bend and seeing the way the trees leaned and at what angle the rain fell. It was also influenced by when I arrived, I lit a candle and the wicked cracked and bent as it burned. It was strange. So, here is the film. If you get it, then email me and tell me what you think it means. If you need help, some clues are laid out below. I hope they help. Good luck. Oh, and stay tuned after the film is over. There's an extra snippet of film that i just couldn't bare to neglect.
( |the botanical wick.| )
So, there it is. I hope you enjoyed the film and the entry, because I certainly did. Expect more film projects coming as well. I enjoyed my experiments in film and have, since then, made more shorts and plan to make plenty more. so stick around, won't you? xo.

I haven't written in a while, and I apologize. I've been a bit busy. Its been too exciting to write, or too dull to write. Either way, let me indulge you in what is worth saying. I recorded two new songs for my solo project, I Follow Orders of Black. One called "Rosemary, Let's Rage" and another called "The Beat to Keep is Black". "Rosemary..." is featured on the myspace right now. "The Beat to Keep..." may be added later after some fine tuning is done on it. Both are sounding pretty good though. I also got to see The Raveonettes' "Amazing Electric Duo Tour" a couple weeks ago. They were fantastic live. Their new songs are sounding great, too. I was really happy they played the old b-side "Experiments in Black" to finish the night off. They also included in their set covers of Buddy Holly's "Everyday", The Gun Club's "Sex Beat", and Sonic Youth's "100%". All three done wonderfully. Spin.com did a review of the show, if you care to look at it. The Horrors are next week. I look forward to seeing them. Other than that, my days have been filled with vegan donuts, discussions about puppies, the letdown caused by the deconstruction of Pike/Pine, job applications, and thoughts of moving to New York. I also have been trying to decide if I should cut my hair or grow it out long again. any suggestions? Oh, and I almost forgot, I went to North Bend to stay at my families' property for a night. The isolation was a fit intimidating, but worth it. I enjoyed myself. My clothes still smell of firewood and my thoughts still consist of ads from W Magazine. I'd elaborate on my stay, but I'd rather leave that for an entry of it's own. Photos and video included. I think my quesadilla is done. goodbye. xo. ps. i have a special suprise coming with my next entry so stay tuned. i'll give you a hint: umbrella, hidden wick, the flow of water, smoke patterns, and suspension of disbelief. ;)

Thursday night's alright for recording. Gillian and I recorded two songs the other night and they came out great. For temporary titles, we're naming all the songs after Baldwin brothers. Alec is defiantly my favorite thus far. It has a great feel to it. At the moment I'm actually taking a break from putting some piano to it. I'm playing in a sort of a honky tonk style. Think Elton circa "Don't Shoot Me...". I'm liking it very much, thus far. I think I might add some underlining organ as well just to set a good vibe. I still have to redo the drum tracking and the upright bass recording. Sorry all the technical jibber jabber. I can only imagine how boring I must sound. before I move on from this subject, though, I think I should tell you the name of the project. Are you ready? are you sure? ok here it is....drumroll, please? The name is Welcome Home, S.S. Thunderstruck. Now how's that for a name? I don't know about you, but I love it. As for other news, I think I might accompany a friend to LA sometime this month. I'm hoping it will fall towards the end of the month. Most of my LA sweethearts will be in town then. To be honest, I wish I had more to talk about. I decided to do an entry thinking i had something to write about, but it wouldn't seem so. I have to take my father to the airport in the morning at 6. This is a bit early for my liking (or anyone's, for that matter) so I'm just going to stay up all night. Of course the one night I plan on staying up all night is the night i start to get tired...figures. Ok, I'm gonna finish watching The X-Files then find other activities to occupy my time. Farwell, strange drifter. xo. p.s. A friend sent me something interesting. It's the trailer to the new biofilm about Joy Division directed by Anton Corbijn. Check it out here: Control.

| i've come to wish you an unhappy birthday. |
[22 May 2007|02:49pm] |

Today is Morrissey's birthday. Ol' Mozza has reached the ripe young age of 48. In his own words, "Where did the years go? Why did the years go?" I hope you all go and listen to at least one morrissey song. Thanks Moz for the longest companionship that's surpassed the length of ay friendship or relationship I've ever had. The years have been uncountable and keep on rolling. I'll see you in another 48 years...but we can just call those "far off places", yes? Other than Steven's birthday, tonight is a night for recording and filming. I'm recording Gill's solo brilliance tonight. We are recording two songs and writing a few more. Maybe throwing together a cover of some sorts. I'm really looking forward to seeing what comes out tonight. Whatever it is, I have no doubt it will be wonderful. Stay tuned. As for filming, I might be filming some on this project I'm doing tonight. I don't want to divulge too much of what it is or what it's about. I'll tell you this much: "it's about a girl in trouble." Thus far it is starring Kaitlyn, a blindfold, a pair of hands, and a ring. And (did i really just start a paragraph with the word "and"? oh my. tsk tsk.) while we're on the subject of projects, a new sketch will be up soon. keep an eye out. What do you get when you mix machinery and a hummingbird? You'll see. I'm gonna go buy a cupcake in honor of Moz. I'd send it to him, but I'm the kind who likes to have his cupcake and eat it too. xo.

| the portrait of lady sheers. |
[22 May 2007|03:32am] |
|
This is a new piece that I recently finished. It was started a while back but I just never got around to completing it. Last night i finally had a spark of inspiration. I'd say it came out alright. I think one day i might put some color in it. Maybe revamp it by making a painting of the same image, who knows. But for the time being, ladies and gentlemen, meet Lady Sheers.
"There once was a woman named Lady Sheers. She accepted all but one of her fears. Her heart would race at the sight of blades, knowing they'd be used at the hand of her maid to strike her down, and that they did. now they rest with her over her eyelids."
I'm starting my next piece tonight in what I think will turn into a bit of a series. The concept just seems to broad to limit to one piece. I won't tell you, though. It can be a suprise. And you like suprises, don't cha? Yeah, I know you do.

This is the new journal. A home for the my musings. I'm departing from my old journal, countxdanny, for one simple reason. Because I'm bored with it. I won't be using that one anymore so please add this one. Thank you. As for an update, not much has been going on. I've been giving myself over to Lady Insomnia far too often and it's really starting to take its tole. M plan for tonight is just take a few Irenes and retire around 12 or so. It'll be terribly hard, but it has to be done. I can't keep doing this. It's gonna drive me to an early grave, I'm sure. Although, I won't lie to you. That statement was most definatly not rooted in scientific fact of any sort. It's been raining a lot lately. I usually enjoy it quite a bit, but tonight it really started to get to me. As god-awful as LA weather can be, I found myself longing for it. Very strange granted that, when I'm there, I'll be avoiding it at all costs. It looks like I'll most likely be moving there June 6th. The sooner the better, too. I hate saving money. The temptation of actually seeing money in the bank just makes me want to blow it all on some rediculious item. I can't wait to see my Hollywood loves though. Andy, Travis, Tyson, Aubrie, Lisa, Joey, Little Lugosi, Jenn, Mitchell, etc. And of course I couldn't forget the amazing food. Real Food Daily, M, Swingers, and so on. I guess Katie will be coming to visit before I leave, so I'll have to make the best of Seattle and her trip before I leave. That means plenty of Bauhaus coffee, Honeyhole vegan BLTs, and buscuits and gravy with frenchtoast at The Globe. Maybe a dinner at Moonlight Cafe will have to be in order with the usual suspects. I'm going to miss out spontanious Moonlight gatherings and Office watching parties. Seattle is definatly good for more things than it's given credit for. xo.
